Here’s Where Venice Area High Schools Rank Across L.A. and California

A New Report Ranked High Schools According to Their Graduation Rates; Performance on Math, Reading and Science Assessments; And Participation on AP Exams

By Zach Armstrong

A prominent ranking has assessed how high schools in the Venice, CA area compare to others across the city and state.

In its 2024 Best High Schools list, U.S. News & World Report ranked high schools across the nation according to their graduation rates; student performance on math, reading and science assessments; and participation on AP exams. There were 1,652 total schools in California and 17,655 in the country which were ranked.

The list ranked Venice Senior High School 143rd among all Los Angeles metro area high schools, 321st in California and 2,321st across the country.

According to U.S. News & World, VSH has a 9-12 enrollment of 2,107; 69% of which are “economically disadvantaged”. The outlet also calculated how schools performed on student performance on state-required tests and internationally available exams on college-level coursework to determine their score on a “college readiness index.” On this front, VSH scored 34.6/100 and ranked 432rd across California schools.

Neighboring Animo Venice Charter, a college preparatory academy operated by Green Dot Public Schools, landed closely behind VHS.

U.S. News & World ranked it 224th among all L.A. metro area high schools, 506th in California and 3,704th in the nation. Its 9-12 enrollment currently stands at 414; 92% of which are described by the list as “economically disadvantaged.” One respect where Animo Venice Charter scored higher than VHS was on the list’s college readiness index, which ranked AVC 346th in the state.

Phoenix Continuation, located at 12971 Zanja St., was unranked by U.S. World & News.

Although this list placed Venice area schools in relatively high spots among Los Angeles and California learning institutions, VHS and AVC ranked considerably lower than their Westside counterparts.

The U.S. News & World list ranked Santa Monica High School 48th among all Los Angeles high schools, 120th in California and 850th in the country. Malibu High School also scored prominently. It ranked 26th among L.A. metro schools, 77th in California and 573rd nationally. Palisades Charter ranked 110th among L.A. metro schools, 249th in California and 1,760th across the nation.
