Ocean and Marine Life Lovers Will Be Convening on the Shores of Venice Beach to Witness the Silvery Fish Hatch Their Eggs
Tonight at 10:45 p.m., ocean and marine life lovers will be convening on the shores of Venice Beach to witness the arrival of grunions as they hatch their eggs.
Hosted by the Venice Oceanarium, the event is free and located on the Venice breakwater rocks (only visible during low tides). There, a glowing mass and a tent will be where the gathering will take place. Warm clothes and a flashlight are recommended.
Grunions, silvery fish which exclusively exist in Southern California and the Northern Baja California coast, are known for their late-night mating ritual known as “grunion runs.” They leave the ocean and spawn on the beach each spring and summer as the nights’ high tides fall following full and new moons. These spawning runs usually occur within two-hour intervals.
