The Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) will present the first 2010 installment of the “Planet Siqueiros Peña” series on Saturday, February 20th. The series provides a unique blend of socially conscious traditional world music, contemporary musical styles, and spoken word.
“Planet Siqueiros Peña” presents Alfredo Lopez & Friends, a special evening of rich traditional Mexican musical genres from the states of Michoacán, Oaxaca, Hidalgo, Querètaro, San Luis Potosí, Guerrero, Jalisco, Yucatán and Tabasco; genres such as Clave Yucateca, Aguanieve, Huasteco, Son Planeco, Son de Costumbre and more will be performed by Alfredo Lopez, director of the famed Mexican musical group Quetzalcoatl, along with local musicians Jesus R. Carlos, and Isaac Ruben Izquierdo.
Tickets are $10. Food and open cash bar will be available during intermission.
Alfredo Lopez is an extraordinary musician/vocalist who has mastered more than twenty styles of Latino American traditional music. He is the director of Mexico’s well-known musical group Quetzalcoatl and plays over thirty acoustic stringed and percussion instruments. His performances include solo concerts at venues such as the Smithsonian Institute, Royce Hall at UCLA and more. Alfredo has composed songs which have been included in films such as “The Net” (Sandra Bullock), “Luminarias” (Scott Bakula and Robert Beltran), “American Me” produced and directed by Edward James Olmos who also stars in the film, “The Maldonado Miracle”, produced and directed by Salma Hayek.
Jesus R. Carlos is a gifted musician whose concerts have been recognized in the LA Weekly as “Pick of the Week” and also earned front-page attention in La Opinion’s, “Espectaculos”. He has studied classical guitar and classical violin with world-renowned LA Philharmonic violinist Mischa Lefkowitz.
Isaac Ruben Izquierdo, studied classical guitar at the University of Mexico City and graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a composer, arranger and guitarist who is currently working on many projects which include writing the musical score for the documentary “2500 plus one sculptures”, Alejandro Santiago, Mexican artist and collaborates as a core member for SPARC’s Peña in Venice, California. Ruben’s compositions were featured in both the Guitar Player’s “Spotlight” section and “Musico Pro” Magazine where he received favorable reviews.
Also performing is Ann Polhemus, a professional singer for 25 years, she has performed in numerous musicals, bands, choirs, and studio work including the national tour of The Wizard of Oz as Dorothy, The Girl Group, acapella trio, The Lefteous Sisters, the Los Angeles Opera and Big Love. She has also produced and starred in two feature films, My Bad Dad and The Scottish Tale. Her performance will consist of original “songs of love” accompanied by Isaac Ruben Izquierdo.
