Venice’s Land Use and Planning Committee, the group that hears public comment and makes recommendations to the City of Los Angeles regarding Venice development, is meeting at 6:30pm tonight at the Vera Davis Center, 610 California Ave, Venice.
A matter of concern on tonight’s agenda, the recent decision by members of the California Coastal Commission to consider dismissing Executive Director Charles Lester. Something which will have a long term effect on the direction on development in Venice Beach.
LUPC Chair Robin Rudisill asks that Venice residents come and share public comments regarding the matter saying, “the position is an appointee of the Commission, which is appointed by elected officials, so I don’t believe we can make a recommendation, but this is an extremely important issue for Venice and I want to be sure that Venetians have an opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts about this.”
Comprising 12-members, the Coastal Commission was established in 1972 in the interests of protecting the California coastline from the environmental impact of over development, and to protect public beach access.
On Wednesday the LA Times reported that environmental groups believed the move to get Lester out is a result of pro-development commissioners clashing with the executive director.
