Rally to Save the Historic Post Office 2-18-12

From the Venice Neighborhood Council:

The Postal Regulatory Commission recently denied multiple appeals of the United States Post Office decision to sell the Venice Main Post Office after subjecting retail services there to a years-long campaign of attrition.

Brad Kay’s Venice Anthem

The 1939 structure is the last downtown Venice building remaining after urban renewal in 1964-1965 destroyed hundreds of Venice’s historic buildings. Once the USPS vacates the building, it enjoys no legal protection from alteration or worse.

Noted artist Edward Biberman’s “Story of Venice” mural inside the lobby is one of only two of his murals that remain; the other is in the lobby of the downtown Los Angeles U.S. Courthouse, declared an historic building in 2006.

Responding to VNC’s support to retain the Post Office and historic building, our Post Office Task Force is working with the Coalition to Save the Post Office, comprised of Venetian organizations and individuals from all across the political and social spectrum. Letters are being written and petitions are being signed for delivery to local, state and national representatives.

Click here to see the petition.

Whether you value universal and affordable mail service for all Americans, or whether you care about preserving the historic building and mural, you are invited to attend this important rally to support an issue that has brought Venetians together in a unique display of community unity for a truly common cause.

When: Saturday, February 18, 2012
Time: 2 – 4 pm
