Student artwork from Todd Lesner’s 5th grade class at Westminster Elementary School is currently being featured at The G2 Gallery on Abbot Kinney as part of a silent auction to benefit the environmental non-profit Earthjustice. The auction runs until December 31st.
Artist Miriam Schulman donated cameras to the students of Mr. Lesner’s class with which to photograph “nature in their neighborhood” while Jared Nigro of G2 Gallery provided instruction in the basics of composition, focus, back lighting, negative space, subject selection and contrast.
Students critiqued each others finished work in the class room, voting on their favorite images based on the criteria of picture making they had learned. The images that received the most votes are included in the silent auction.
This collaboration highlights a trend in our local public schools in which businesses are donating not just monies, but also other resources like equipment and intellectual capital to create experiential learning opportunities in schools where funding for the arts is no longer available.
Westminster Elementary Booster Club President Katie Labrie acknowledged the support of the local community, saying “many Venice businesses contribute their time and expertise to help WE,” including local chefs, architects, and gardeners.
