Someone came along and changed the “Who in the heaven is Larry” on the side of the new Hotel Erwin owned restaurant Larry’s to “Who in the heaven is Spanto?”, in honor of Venice artist Sponto, who passed on in December of 2009.
Update: I have been told that this is not a dedication to Sponto, but a statement against the gentrification of Venice.
Larry’s, named after Venice artist Larry Bell, will feature a robust beer list including 26 drafts and an eclectic California wine list from low-production “hidden gem” wineries. They will be open for lunch, dinner and “late-night”. Word on the street has it that Larry’s opening has been delayed as Chef Lulu De Rouen (formerly of the Patina Group) is out and the new unnamed Chef wanted a remodel of the brand new kitchen.
