VENICE — Culver City police fatally shot a man in Venice early Saturday, sheriff’s deputies said. The man apparently did not follow orders to get out of his car after the stop.
The shooting occurred at California Avenue and Frederick Street around midnight.
Police say they saw a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle in an assault involving a man with a gun.
They say three men were in the car, and that a passenger exited the vehicle and refused to follow officers’ orders, then reached for his waistband. It was unclear if one or more officers opened fire.
The fatally wounded man turned out to be unarmed, but police say a gun was seized at the scene.
Two other men were arrested at the scene, according to sheriff’s deputies.
About 20 minutes before the shooting, someone reportedly flagged down officers and told them a gun was pointed at them from a vehicle, which they described.
The officers saw a vehicle matching the description of one given to them, and they pulled it over, with backup from several other Culver City officers, according to a Sheriff’s Deputy.
Sheriff’s homicide detectives are assisting Culver City police with the investigation.
