(I couldn’t resist.)
Yo, meet the newest contributor to Yo! Venice…Johnnie Jenkins! Johnnie is THE go-to guy about everything and anything happening in the food & wine scene in Venice – so we are thrilled he wants to blog for us! Here is the first post of what we hope will be a regular feature on Yo! Venice!
Robin’s Nest, our wonderful little "Quality Convenience Market" on the last block of Venice, closed a couple months back. Ronen Helmann, the super outgoing and easy going new proprietor promises to more than double the inventory of "organic and gourmet food from around the world."
With a huge cold case of specialty beverages, cheeses and meats to choose from, this is definitely a great stop for your staples when you don’t want to bike all the way to the Whole Foods on the other side of our universe. His background in agriculture should show through in the excellent selection of local organic produce, and he is super excited about his packaged goods as well-very quick to brag about the artisan marshmallows he found! They also have the best coffee in Venice-my own opinion-it’s ground to order from fresh beans roasted weekly at La Mill, and poured through the Cadillac of espresso machines.

Venice, CA
Glad to have you on board Johnnie!
is Bellissimo open then?
welcome johnnie!
Weclome Johnnie! Too bad about Robin’s, it was such a cute little place. But exciting that something new is replacing it.
On a similar note, there’s another Italian deli that looks to be opening soon on Lincoln, just north of Superba on the east side of the street. Something with Centanni in the name. Nice building but it looks like it may be a chain, but not one that I’ve heard of.
Thanks everyone. I only hope to live up to such a glorious intro…
Anna, I was just thinking of Centanni yesterday, and though I would give some detail soon-Def not a chain. I did speak to one of the owners many months ago, but wasn’t fishing for too much at the time. A quick Yahoo search brings up an ancient site listing Los Angeles restaurants…They even have menus listed for (RIP) Rebeccas, 72 Market, and West Beach! Nostalgic to say the least…http://www.studyworld.com/culinary/laxall.htm
What’s the word on Centanni? I love going to Bay Cities, but the parking lot and crowd make trips there stressful. It’ll be good to have another, closer option.
Bellissimo opened about 5 days ago, a much needed little shop in the area. The deli is great, tried a sandwich at Bellissimo yesterday, good prices! And the guy making sandwiches in the back does a great job…he’ll make anything you want as long as the ingredients are in the store. Too bad I already forgot his name!
