From the VNC:
VNC Will Decide Whether to Back Expedited Changes to LA Ordinances so “Vehicles to Homes” Program Can Move Forward
A motion brought before the Venice Neighborhood Council Board of Officers seeks support for expediting changes to city laws which prevent the “Vehicles to Homes” program from moving forward.
The motion will be heard at the VNC’s regularly scheduled Board of Officers meeting on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Westminster Elementary School, 1010 Abbot Kinney Blvd. starting at 7:00PM.
The “Vehicle to Homes” program, proposed by Councilman Bill Rosendahl, will be operated by a private contractor (under the authority of the Los Angeles Housing Services Administration) to provide a way for certain vehicle dwellers to park overnight in assigned spaces while receiving assistance to move into permanent housing. Several obstacles stand in the program’s way – among them are required amendments to the city’s laws that prohibit camping or living on city streets and in City owned parking lots. Those changes must be approved by the City’s Transportation Committee and then by the entire City Council before the Vehicles to Homes program can begin in Council District 11.
In another motion relating to vehicle dwellers, the VNC will consider a motion to support overnight parking for homeless veterans on Veterans Administration grounds in West LA.
In other business, the VNC will decide whether to request the City to extend the assignment of 21 Police Officers to the Venice community. The officers were initially deployed this fall to help stem an increase in crime. The Board will also consider a revision of its current budget allocations and to set up a new ad hoc committee on “Visitor Impact” to create strategies based on the comments made at the recent VNC Town Hall Meeting.
The VNC will be collecting non-violent toys (unwrapped, please) at the meeting to be distributed by the LAPD Pacific Division to local children.
Snacks and coffee will be provided.
A detailed agenda will be posted on the internet at www.VeniceNC.org and at posting places in the community.
There is no charge for this event. It is open to the public. Comments are encouraged.
