On Friday, January 27 at 7pm Small World Books will host a reading and slideshow by author Domenic Priore with his book “Riot on Sunset Strip: Rock ‘n’ Roll’s Last Stand in Hollywood.” The presentation includes several period photos from L.A.’s 1955-1966 art, jazz, and folk rock scene as well as discussion of The Doors, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Frank Zappa, Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas & The Papas and more!
Priore says “the scene itself was a magnet, and people came to L.A. from all over the world during this time, partially because of the city’s ability to broadcast true art during those years. A sister city to Mod-era London, mid-’60s Hollywood was the rare media center tweaked by the progressive nature of all that was happening with the younger generation. By recognizing people, places and developments in the music, arts and activist movement of mid-’60s L.A., perhaps we can all better understand what has previously been overlooked or underestimated about this completely crucial time and place, and what it contributed to the positive social change that ’60s represented overall.”
The reading is free! Arrive early for munchies and to browse! Free parking is available for this event at the corner of Market and Speedway.
