It’s St. Patrick’s Day for March’s next Venice Art Crawl, and we’re ready to get our green on with several “Go Green” inspired art shows within the mile-long art crawl on Venice Beach! We’re leaning more toward environmentally green and less toward Leprechauns with the art projects, but we’d like to see a sea of green at the beach by our crawlers!
Green exhibitions:
Housemates brings you Evergreen at Canal Club. This group show, inspired by the idea of “going-green,” features a variety of recycled and eco-conscious art, ranging from skateboards refashioned into wall-art by high-profile local artist William Attaway, to landscape and nature photography by David Zentz and John Chapple. More than eight artists will be participating, as well as music by local DJ collective Housemates, featuring Matta Xavier, Aiden Ramos and Jacob Vaynshtok. Canal Club will also be offering St. Patrick’s Day-inspired food and drink specials.
The C.A.V.E. Gallery presents The Venice “Go Green” Artcrawl at James Beach. Walt Hall will be featuring work from his collection “Fenceposts for a Better Tomorrow” which was inspired by sustainable living. Hall’s pieces are the centerpiece of a group show including 15 other artists, live painting by Michael Pukac and music by DJ Josh Gold.
Venice Breeze Suites is hosting artwork by Cynthia Rogers, a Malibu native whose repurposed material art was inspired by treasures she would find while beachcombing along Zuma Beach or digging in her backyard in Ramirez Canyon. Playfully calling her work part of a “consumer recycling program,” Rogers creates whimsical assemblage constructions that to each person create a different story or perhaps hark back a certain memory.
On the northern end of the crawl, Kent Bell’s Metalsmith work will be featured at his 637 Rose Ave. studio. Bells work combines his skills as a jeweler, metalsmith and sculptor creating small-scale works out of found objects, semi-precious materials and “a sense of wonder,” which will be on display during his reception from 7 to 11 p.m. Free drinks and a bite to eat will be provided.
Chase brings presence to the artcrawl!
Momentum presents The Art of Chase, featuring new work from Venice’s famed street artist and entrepreneur as well as pieces from other Venice artists: Isabelle Alford-Lago, Jay Friedman, Nic Adams and Hashim Thomas. Despite his ubiquitous work throughout this beachside neighborhood, this will be Chase’s first show in Venice.
“Since I’ve started repainting the Wavecrest mural in Venice, everyone I interact with can’t stop talking about the Venice Art Crawl,” he says. “There seems to be a really creative and positive force behind it. I’m excited to be showing my work during the crawl this month. It will be my first show ever in Venice and I couldn’t imagine a better opportunity to do it.”
There will be a $10 door charge for the evening and attendees will receive a complimentary mini bottle of champagne. DJ 3rdi will be spinning music in between sets by Los Angeles electronica artist Vancans and folk/grunge artist Mr. Catfish.
Live music and art at the Figtree Café
In the mood for some upbeat acoustic blues rock? Then swing by the Figtree Café on Ocean Front Walk to catch Dustin Louis Blank, Matt Wise and other talents perform live sets. The eclectic restaurant will have a hummus tasting for visitors as they check out the various artists, including Santa Monica via Australia artist Grant Buckerfield, on display.
Parking:
Above is a general map highlighting the art crawl’s main areas of activity and places to park. A detailed event map will be available the day of the crawl. Most of the art crawl lies within the two blocks between Pacific Ave. and the beach. It also runs from N. Venice Boulevard to Rose Ave. This is Venice Beach, where thousands of tourists visit each day, so there is plenty of parking available, either on streets or in beach parking lots.
True to Venice character, this is not your average art show! This crawl is a product of the artists, not a commercial venture, so the local talent is not only involved, but roaming the streets enjoying the scene with all of you. Many artists take this time to create new murals or artwork live, and past crawls have been full of book signings, spoken word performances, live body art exhibits and plenty of DJ’d shows for visitors to enjoy.
