8 Top Tips for Organizing Your Home to Help Lower Stress and Improve Your Mental Health

Getting organised can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to your home. A cluttered and disorganised living space can be a major source of stress and anxiety making it difficult to relax and enjoy your surroundings. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to get your home in order and reduce your stress levels in the process.

In this blog post, we’ve put together 8 top tips for organising your home to help you feel happier and more relaxed.

  1. Start with a plan

Before you start organising, it’s important to have a plan in place. This will help you focus your efforts and make the process more efficient and enjoyable. Begin by writing a list of all the areas in your home that need organising and what needs to be done in each of these areas. A professional home organiser always writes their to-do list in order of priority and sets a timeline for when they hope to have each task completed. Organising an entire home can be overwhelming, so it’s good to tackle each area separately and tick off as you go.

  1. Declutter

One of the biggest contributors to stress in a cluttered home is unnecessary items taking up much needed storage. Whether it’s clothes that no longer fit, broken toys or old magazines, having too many possessions can make it difficult to keep your home organised and tidy. Start by going through each room asking yourself what items are necessary and which are just taking up space. With any items you no longer need, consider donating ones in good condition, recycling anything that can be recycled, and throwing away anything that can’t be salvaged.

  1. Get creative with storage

Once you’ve decluttered your home, start thinking about how to store the items you want to keep. This can be a really fun part of the process, as you can get creative with storage solutions to suit your individual style. For example, you may want to install shelves or invest in stackable containers to maximise space in your closet or pantry. During this process, think about how accessible you need items to be. For seasonal decorations and clothing, consider using lidded plastic containers that can be hidden away under the bed or in the attic.

  1. Create zones

Organising your home into zones is a great way to keep it tidy and make it easier to put things away. For example, you could have a reading zone in your living room, a work zone in your home office and a relaxing zone in your bedroom. This can help you focus your attention and keep your home feeling calm and clutter-free.

  1. Establish routines

By dividing organising tasks into daily, weekly and monthly routines, it’s easy to keep on top of your to-do list. You could have a daily routine for tidying up your living room, a weekly routine for doing laundry, and a monthly routine for cleaning out your closet. Having a set routine will help you stay on track and make it easier to keep your home organised and tidy.

  1. Involve everyone in the house

Getting organised is a team effort and everyone in your home should be involved. Assign each person in the household a task, whether it’s making the bed, putting away toys or folding laundry. If you have children, create a reward system such as a sticker chart to make completing tasks fun and engaging. You can also encourage everyone to take ownership of their own spaces and be responsible for keeping them tidy.

  1. Find a system that works for you

There are many different organisational systems to choose from, so find one that works best for you and your home. For example, you may prefer a minimalist approach with a focus on simplicity and functionality, or you may prefer a more decorative approach with colourful baskets and bins to store your items. Whatever system you choose, make sure it’s functional, easy to maintain and helps you stay organised.

  1. Be flexible

Finally, it’s important to be flexible and willing to change your approach if something isn’t working. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different organisational systems and storage solutions until you find what works best for you. Remember that organisation is a process and it may take some time to find the right solution for your home.
