Authorities have released the name of a man who
was fatally injured by an SUV while helping to attach the vehicle to a boat trailer in Marina del Rey.

Antonio Jalog Smith, 41, of Corona, was killed about 3:20 p.m. Saturday at Dock 77 at 13650 Mindanao Way, according to Assistant Los Angeles County Coroner Chief Ed Winter.

The driver, 64-year-old Romulo Perez of Los Angeles, was backing up a 1999 Ford Expedition to a boat trailer as Smith, who was assisting, stood to the rear of the SUV, which was reversed at “unsafe speeds,” according to a California Highway Patrol statement.

After hitting the man, the SUV continued going backward and struck a Hyundai Genesis and a Dodge Charger, the CHP reported. Perez was not arrested, but the fatality remains under investigation.

Anyone who witnessed what happened was urged to call the investigating officer at the CHP’s West Los Angeles Office at:  (310) 642-3939 during regular business hours.
