Top Causes of Car Accidents in California and How to Avoid Them

California is one of the most populated states in the US; it hosts the star-studded city of Los Angeles, Disneyland, and other fun theme parks, as well as diverse and beautiful natural scenery. Unfortunately, high populations lead to heavy traffic and increased accidents. Los Angeles has some of the highest traffic rates in the entire country! When traveling through or moving to the gorgeous state of California, you should know the top car accident causes here and learn how to avoid them.

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is so prevalent in California that a law that made it illegal for drivers to use their phones or any other electric device outside of an emergency was implemented. Drivers may only briefly tap their phone if it is mounted on the dashboard. Unfortunately, phone use isn’t the only type of distracted driving. Fiddling with car settings, eating, or managing children in the backseat are all dangerous forms of distracted driving. Pulling over if you need to adjust anything for longer than a brief second is essential. Keep your eyes on the road; nothing is worth your life.

Driving Under the Influence

While a first-time DUI charge can get you fined, on probation, or your driver’s license suspended, these punishments do little to stop drivers from intoxicated driving. One of the most prevalent causes of California accidents is drunk driving. If you are under the influence of alcohol, you will need to wait to sober up or arrange for alternative transportation; bringing a designated sober driver is always an intelligent choice. You can also use public transit, taxis, or rideshare services. It is tough to avoid drunk drivers on the road; if you notice anyone driving erratically by swerving or making dangerous maneuvers, steer clear of them the best you can. You may be eligible for compensation if a drunk driver hits you, so you may want to consult with a reputable law firm like Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers.

Speeding

The deadliest cause of car accidents is speeding. Controlling vehicles at higher speeds is more difficult, and cars are totaled more easily. Drivers’ reaction times are significantly reduced when speeding, making it harder to avoid danger. Along the coast of California are roads on cliffsides with sharp curves and high altitudes. Speeding on roads like these can quickly kill. Follow posted speed limits and avoid going too fast on unfamiliar roads. Be wary of other drivers, especially those who speed; don’t engage with them, and keep your distance.

Road Rage

Busy streets and heavy traffic lead to a lot of frustration among drivers. While small amounts of frustration can be expected, intense road rage can lead to speeding, reckless driving, and accidents. Avoid reckless behaviors like cutting people off or weaving in between vehicles. If others drive recklessly around you, take a different route or keep a wide berth.

Sightseeing

California has mountain ranges, beautiful beaches, cliffsides, and incredible tourist attractions like the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Golden Gate Bridge. While it may be tempting to slow down or stop to peek at these rare sights, it’s dangerous. Blocking the roads can cause traffic, rear-end accidents, or distracted driving accidents. If you’d like to look at California scenery, consider pulling over and viewing it properly instead. If other drivers are sightseeing, be careful while maneuvering around them, as they may not pay full attention.

Hazardous Roads

Due to the wide range of biodiversity, some of California’s roads are dangerous to drive on while speeding or unprepared. While the state’s highways, such as I-15, are often the deadliest due to speeds, more scenic roads can be dangerous, too. Infamous scenic routes like 17-Mile Drive and Pacific Coast Highway are often near cliff edges or water, making for deadly accidents. Drive carefully on tight curves or cliff edges. Be mindful of other drivers on the road.

Weather

California is known for significant weather events, like earthquakes and wildfires. While many parts of the state are prone to drought, others can experience heavy rain, flooding, and snow, which can impact road safety. Earthquakes can damage streets, separate roads, and cause bridge collapses. Wildfires can block a driver’s way home. Pay attention to any inclement weather warnings before driving. If an earthquake occurs while driving, slow down and pull somewhere safe. Aftershocks are common, so you will want to avoid pulling over on or under bridges, overpasses, and other dangerous areas.

Broken Traffic Laws

Speeding is only one example of a traffic law that can cause deadly accidents. Failing to use turn signals, sudden braking, not using headlights, and other reckless and illegal driving methods can also result in fatal car accidents. Traffic laws exist for a reason; do not break them for convenience. Signal whenever you’re turning and switch your headlights on when visibility is low. Avoid speeding or crossing multiple lanes without warning or looking. If you witness others disobeying traffic laws, keep a vast distance and avoid them as much as possible.
