Earlier this afternoon the east side underneath the Venice Pier was filled in with with sand, fenced off and then reinforced with exterior sandbags in an effort to curtail a sizable transient encampment that had formed under the pier.
Hypodermic needles found buried in the sand made this situation dangerous for residents, tourists and the transients themselves. As this area was also used for overnight encampments by the transients, the City was concerned for “under the pier” dwellers safety as the location was so close to the sea.
This was a multi-week project between concerned residents, The Department of Beaches and Harbors and the LAPD.
