VNC: Politics, Hollywood and Booze: 10-23-12

From the Venice Neighborhood Council:

Henry Waxman and Bill Bloomfield, candidates for the US House, have been invited to address the Venice Neighborhood Council’s next Board Meeting on Tuesday, October 23rd. Waxman, who has represented LA’s Westside since 1975, will be running in the newly drawn 33rd Congressional District, which now includes Venice and stretches down the coast all the way to Palos Verdes. Bloomfield, a Manhattan Beach developer and business owner, is challenging him for the seat. The two men have held several debates in Palos Verdes, but this will be the first time they have shared a stage on the Westside.

Joel Silver, who purchased the historic Venice Post Office building after the USPS put it on the market, will also talk to the VNC Board at the meeting. Mr. Silver will discuss his plans for the historic building, which include relocating his movie production company to the site after remodeling and restoration work are completed (in about 18 months). Among other projects to be completed prior to the companies move is the restoration of the Edward Bieberman mural “First Thirty Years of Venice’s History,” which has hung in the Post Office lobby since 1941.

Also attending the meeting will be Joe Cruz, Assistant Director of the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) board for Southern California. The ABC is the state agency responsible for licensing the sale of alcoholic beverages in bars, restaurants and retail outlets. The agency also can investigate and make arrests in connections with violations of the Business and Professional Code. Licensees who violate State laws or local ordinances are subject to disciplinary action and may have their licenses suspended or revoked. Mr. Cruz has been asked to discuss licensing criteria, particularly regarding concentration of alcoholic beverage establishments and enforcement issues.

The VNC’s Board Meeting will be held in the Westminster Elementary School Auditorium, 1010 Abbot Kinney Blvd, starting at 7PM on Oct. 23rd. Snacks and coffee will be provided.

A detailed agenda will be posted on the internet at VeniceNC.org and at posting places in the community.

There is no charge for this event. It is open to the public. Comments are encouraged.
