A homeless couple in Venice are being held in connection with an attack with a skateboard on another couple not far from the area’s main strip.
Ashley Berg, a 21-year-old prostitute who is six months pregnant, was charged with one count each of assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a weapon and battery, said Frank Mateljan, spokesman with the City Attorney’s office. Her partner, Savoy Anderson, 33, was also charged with one count of battery, Mateljan said.
The incident began around 8:30 p.m. April 7 as a man and woman returned to their car near 3rd Street and Rose Avenue. Anderson reportedly approached the woman and began harassing her, Mateljan said. Berg, who looked on from a nearby tent where she lived with Anderson, joined the argument and tried to hit the woman with a skateboard, Mateljan said.
As the man stepped in to protect the woman, he was hit in the face with the skateboard, Mateljan said.
The homeless pair then began to punch the man and woman, according to Mateljan. Both eventually fled from the scene and were later identified by the victims at the police station, Mateljan said.
A pre-trial hearing for Berg and Anderson is scheduled for April 25. Berg faces two years and six months in jail and Anderson faces six months.
