IG•NITE at SPARC April 2nd

From SPARC:

A highly diverse group of artists from the melting pot of Los Angeles come together for IG•NITE, an evening of art, theater, music, poetry to support the work of The Roots and Wings Project.

SPARC Venice Beach

Founded by artist and activist Jesse Bliss, The Roots and Wings Project seeks to bring attention to the truth and give voice to the unnamed and unspoken through socially transformative and politically charged theater. April 2, 2010 (6pm to 12am) at the Social and Public Arts and Resource Center (SPARC – Old Venice Jail) Gallery.

IG•NITE is an event that stimulates dialogue, thought and emotion through a visual urban and cultural vernacular, embracing the collaboration of all art forms, ranging from innovative theater, excerpts from the play Tree of Fire, to live music and performances.

The visual and performing artists contributing to IG•NITE, such as Double G from Dakah Hip Hop orchestra and visual artist Heribierto Luna, have been inspired by the rhythm and images of underserved communities throughout history and in our present day. The proceeds from IG•NITE go towards the launch of The Roots and Wings Project’s theatrical production, Tree of Fire.

VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTISTS include: Double G, Founder of Dakah Hip-Hop Orchestra, Audio Angel of San Francisco, Miriam Peniche, Margaret Laurena Kemp, Mike the Poet, AK Toney, DJs Cee Brown, Ricky Chavez and Sloe Poke, Herbierto Luna, Michael Massenburg, Sophia Gasparian, Mike Saijo, Alfonso Aceves, Nico and DZR, Liliflor, Noelle Maline, Jennifer Cuellar, Kristy Sandoval, and more.

Tree of Fire is about three female inmates in an aged and ominous women’s prison who are forgotten and left to perish when a Magnolia tree catches fire. As their lives threatened, they are jolted into memories of their past that inform the truth of their souls and the urgent need to expose the inhumanity of the prison to the world.

The nature of Tree of Fire calls for it to be a site-specific traveling theater production that will be produced in abandoned prisons. Tree of Fire acts as a catalyst for social change and awareness towards prison reform and the people living in the shadow of the U.S. prison system.
