So tomorrow is Thanksgiving. Most of us will be spending the day with our family and friends, enjoying each other’s company, and eating more food in 1 meal than anyone should eat in 1 day. For some of our neighbors here in Venice, tomorrow will be no different than any other day: They will be alone. They will be on the street. They will be hungry.
The gang at Fruit Gallery is trying to make sure we all have a day of blessings by organizing a Thanksgiving meal for the homeless – and other businesses are helping out as well. They still need donations and volunteers, though. If you can spare even an hour out of your holiday schedule – I’m sure they’d appreciate the help!
We want to send a friendly reminder and update on the Thanksgiving Day Dinner in Venice Beach. The time and date is still scheduled for Thanksgiving Day Nov 22, 12pm – 2pm. We will be setting up as early as 10am. The Fruit Gallery will be open at 8am for anyone who would like to drop of any food or accessories early. We are also taking early donations of can foods or turkeys anytime from now till the event.
This event has becoming bigger and bigger everyday. We have 3 stations around the Venice area for food prep and cooking. The folks at Rainbow Acres and the Venice Fire Department offered their kitchens to be used for any and all cooking. Currently, we have the following list of items projected to be donated:
Turkeys – 23 (cooked) & 2 (uncooked)
Drinks – 300
Desserts – 7-10 (pies)
Coffee – Provided by GroundWorks
Yams and Potatoes – 10
Donations – $410.00
Tables – 10
We have 6 people committed to cook a complete Thanksgiving dinner with Turkey, sides, and dessert. With the numbers we have now, we could feed over 250 homeless.
We are still in need of:
* More Cooked Turkeys
Please sign yourself up for one of the above items, and let us know which one you will be donating so we can keep our records up to date.
We also still need volunteers who can pick up a tray of food from the shop and take it home to prepare. We will have these trays available 2 days before the event.
We have less than a week to go before the event. We have about 20 volunteers to help set up and serve. At this point we would like to shoot for 10 more volunteers and more food or donations to feed 200 more homeless. Another idea we had was having people load up their cars with boxes of dinners and drive around the city to hand out to the homeless on the streets. Let us know if you are interested.
If you can pass this email along to everyone on your email list we can spread the word faster. I want to thank everyone who signed up and committed to help us this Holiday to feed the homeless folks on Venice Beach.
If you should have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us via email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone (310) 452-3034. We are looking forward to seeing you at the event, and we thank you in advance for all your support.
